Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss, in both men and women, can be a difficult matter to
face. Most of the time, the individuals who are dealing with
hair loss focus solely on the prevention/treatment of hair loss
rather than the origin, which may aid in the
prevention/treatment of hair loss. Although hair loss causes
vary from person to person, there are a few main factors that
cause hair loss, such as heredity and aging.

In men, the most common causes of hair loss are heredity,
hormones and aging. These contribute to the potential for men to
lose hair. In women, some common causes of hair loss include
poor circulation, hormonal changes after menopause or having a
baby, and poor diet. A few other causes of hair loss include
high stress, diabetes, certain drugs, chemicals and hair dyes,
vitamin deficiencies and poor nutrition, and so on.

In the case of losing hair based on genes, there may not be much
that men or women can do in the way of prevention. Chances are
that if a parent or close relative, or many close relatives,
suffer from hair loss, these individuals with also have hair
loss caused by heredity. In these instances, hair loss acts like
a genetic based disease or trait that carries itself in DNA.
However, not all hair loss is heredity based. In fact, some
individuals may experience hair loss, while their parents and
close relatives have not. Usually, this means that another
factor is causing the hair loss, like high stress or poor
nutrition.

When individuals experience hair loss at early ages or in
drastic amounts, this generally indicates that these persons are
sustaining an agent that is contributing to the hair loss. As
aforementioned, along with others, causes of hair loss,
especially in premature and/or drastic cases, are heredity, high
stress and weakness from overworking, hair dyes and other
chemicals, diseases, and so on.

Depending on the reasons for hair loss, there are different
methods to attempt to treat this condition; however, it is
important to first recognize the cause of hair loss in order to
discern which type of treatment to use, if any. For example, if
the cause of hair loss is a disease, or treatment for a disease,
like in the case of using chemotherapy to treat cancer, then a
treatment may not aid in the prevention of hair loss. Yet, if
the cause of hair loss is from stress, then attempts may be made
to prevent stress and treatment products may be used to repair
already damaged hair.

Overall, hair loss, no matter what the cause, is a difficult
matter to confront. Knowing the cause of hair loss, however, may
contribute to the prevention/treatment of hair loss. Individuals
may not have control over why they are losing hair – from
heredity to aging – yet they may find the necessary means to
attempt to treat the damaged hair. The multiple factors
contributing to hair loss make the task of undertaking the
treatment of hair loss difficult, but not impossible. Even in
the most extreme cases, there is usually a solution for the
cause.

Stress seems to have become a
constant factor in today’s fast-paced society. If left
unchecked, it can wreak havoc upon our health. Learning how to
effectively manage stress can mean the difference between being
robust and full of life, or becoming susceptible to illness and
disease. Stress can weaken the immune system and accelerate the
aging process. The ability to relax and rejuvenate promotes
wellness, vitality and longevity. A healthy immune system
regulates our body’s healing process and protects it against
infections and diseases. When stress compromises our immune
function, it can result in colds, flu, fatigue, cardiovascular
disorders and premature aging. Stress increases heart rate,
blood pressure, glucose levels, adrenaline, cortisol, free
radicals and oxidative damage. This initiates the “fight or
flight” response, places undue strain upon the heart, and can
also increase the feelings of anxiety and depression. Protecting
the immune system is a vital part of living longer, feeling
younger and being healthy. Here are ten natural healthy ways to
reduce stress, boost your immune system and slow down the hands
of time. 1. Walking and Physical Activity (dancing,
gardening, cycling, swimming, weight-lifting, etc.). Regular
exercise and physical activity strengthens your immune system,
cardiovascular system, heart, muscles and bones. It also
stimulates the release of endorphins, improves mental
functioning, concentration/attention and cognitive performance,
and lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, cortisol and other
stress hormones. Three 10-minute workout sessions during the day
are just as effective as one 30-minute workout, and a lot easier
to fit into a busy schedule. 2. Yoga and Stretching. The
slow movements and controlled postures of yoga improves muscle
strength, flexibility, range of motion, balance, breathing,
blood circulation and promotes mental focus, clarity and
calmness. Stretching also reduces mental and physical stress,
tension and anxiety, promotes good sleep, lowers blood pressure
and slows down your heart rate. 3. Hand Hygiene. The most
effective measure in preventing the spread of microorganisms
that cause infections is good hand hygiene. Washing your hands
with soap and water as soon as you come home, and always before
you eat, greatly reduces your exposure to bacterial and viral
infections. In case you cannot wash with soap and water when you
are away from home, carry some alcohol-based hand wipes with you
to control microbial exposure and transmission. 4. Laughter
and Humor.
There is truth to the saying that laughter is the
best medicine. Laughing reduces stress hormones like adrenaline
(epinephrine) and cortisol. It also benefits your immune system
by increasing the number and activity of Natural Killer T-cells.
These cells act as the first line of defense against viral
attacks and damaged cells. Find the humor in things and engage
in activities that make you laugh to increase your immune
function and disease resistance. 5. High Nutrient Diet.
Eat foods rich in antioxidants (like vitamins A, C, E and
lycopene), omega-3 fatty acids, and folate. Antioxidants fight
and neutralize free radicals, which are molecules that damage
cells and cause heart disease, cancer and premature aging.
Omega-3 fatty acids (a polyunsaturated fat) have
anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular-enhancing and
immune-regulating properties. It is helpful in preventing and
controlling high cholesterol, hypertension, heart disease,
stroke, cancer, diabetes, depression, inflammatory and
auto-immune disorders. Folate prevents age-related cognitive
decline, damage to blood vessels and brain cells by lowering
homocysteine levels. It also ensures DNA integrity (important as
we age and when pregnant) and promotes healthy red blood cells.
Excellent food sources for these nutrients are as follows. •
Antioxidants – pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots, kale,
grapefruit (red and pink), blueberries, strawberries,
watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, peppers (red and green),
tomatoes, broccoli, sunflower seeds, almonds and olive oil. •
Omega-3 Fatty Acids – ground flax seeds, walnuts, salmon,
soybeans and pumpkin seeds. • Folate – dark green leafy
vegetables (turnip greens, mustard greens, spinach, romaine
lettuce, collard greens, etc.), beans, legumes, asparagus,
Brussels sprouts, beets and okra. 6. Music. Listening to
your favorite music is a great method of reducing stress and
relieving anxiety. Your individual preference in music
determines which types of soothing sounds will best reduce your
tension, blood pressure, and promote feelings of tranquility.
Pay attention to how you feel when you hear a particular song or
genre of music, and keep listening to the ones that produce a
relaxing effect. 7. Sleep. Getting enough sound sleep has
a profound impact on your stress levels, immune function and
disease resistance. A chronic lack of sleep can leave you
feeling sluggish, irritable, forgetful, accident-prone, and have
difficulty concentrating or coping with life’s daily
aggravations. Long-term sleep loss can also result in heart
disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, and anxiety. Sleep
time is when your body and immune system do most of its repairs
and rejuvenation. Strive to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
Remember rest and relaxation go hand in hand. 8. Positive
Thinking.
Optimism can counteract the negative impact
stress, tension and anxiety has on your immune system and
well-being. Often it is how you perceive things that determine
if you get overwhelmed, both mentally and physically. Having a
positive attitude, finding the good in what life throws your way
and looking at the bright side of things enhances your ability
to effectively manage stress. 9. Tea. Regularly drinking
tea throughout the day can help strengthen your immune system
and your body’s ability to fight off germs and infections. Both
green and black teas contain a beneficial amino acid called
L-theanine, which can increase the infection fighting capacity
of gamma delta T cells. L-theanine also promotes a sense of
relaxation, calmness and well-being by influencing the release
and concentration of neurotransmitters (like dopamine, serotonin
and GABA) in the brain. 10. Hydrotherapy. Relaxing in a
hot bath relieves sore muscles and joints, reduces stress and
tension, and promotes a good night’s sleep. Add some soothing
music, soft lighting and naturally scented bath salts or bubble
bath/bath foam to create an inexpensive and convenient spa

Energy – How to Have More of It

Something the successful business person needs is – lots of
Energy! You need Brain Energy and you need Body Energy. However
as with any other kind of energy, it’s constantly being drained
away and needs replacing.

Dealing with people, your customers and your team, can both
drain your brain and your body – and you probably don’t need me
to tell you that.

Let’s look at Brain Energy – Imagine that you receive a letter
from your bank manager saying – - “I need you to come in and see
me.” If you react to that with – “Oh no! What does he want,
what’s wrong now? Maybe he wants to recall my loan.” That sort
of reaction drains your brain of energy and gives you stress.

The successful business person doesn’t react she thinks.
Reacting drains the brain – thinking, less so.

Get the thinking bit working and say to yourself – “I’ll phone
him now; I’ll speak to him and see what he wants. If it’s about
the poor business results, what information do I need to make my
case? Perhaps he wants to talk about how I could develop the
business.” Whatever you’re thinking – stop the negative stuff -
it’ll kill you

If one of your people comes to you with a problem or you receive
a customer complaint, start thinking – “Let’s see what I can do
about this.”

Do not, and I repeat – Do not say – “Oh no! What am I going to
do now?” Every time you say – “Oh no!” – your brain has a huge
drain of energy.

I just want to say a few more words about stress. People will
tell you that there’s good stress and bad stress. I’m talking
about bad stress and it occurs when your brain is drained of
energy. Some business people seem to believe that it “goes with
the territory” and some even wear it as a “badge of honour.”

They also believe that it can’t be avoided; it’s part of being
in business and the world we live in. Organisations do have a
responsibility to minimise levels of stress in their workforce
but we have a responsibility for ourselves.

It’s very important to minimise your levels of stress and you
can do that by thinking rather than reacting. Challenge your
inbuilt programs, stop saying – “That makes me really mad” or
“That really gets on my nerves.”

Start saying – “This is something I have to deal with and I’ll
deal with it” – You have the choice.

I know your probably thinking (or is it reacting) – “That’s all
very well Alan but its hard sometimes not to get stressed.”
You’re absolutely right however; let me give you some more
reasons why you need to work at minimising it.

Stress can cause heart disease, sleeplessness, sexual problems,
overeating, drinking too much, loss of concentration and stomach
upsets. Research is now telling us that many if not most of our
illnesses can be related to stress.

When we get stressed a chemical is released into our bloodstream
called Cortisol, sometimes known as the Stress Hormone. High
levels of Cortisol can lead to diabetes and skin problems. There
is also a suggestion that Cortisol attacks our immune system and
leaves us vulnerable to many of the bugs and viruses that come
along. This also includes cancer.

So if you’ve ever suffered from skin complaints or perhaps too
many colds, it could very well be the results of stress. I don’t
want to scare you death or give you any more stress, I just want
you to – think.

Now let’s look at Body Energy -

So what about the body stress? The body and the brain are linked
together so when the brain drains of energy so does the body.
However the body does a lot of running about, up and down off
the seat and often takes a bit of a battering. For it to work
well, it needs to be in good condition in the first place. We
should all know by now that if we eat too much or eat the wrong
things, smoke too much or drink too much alcohol, then our body
is in danger of breaking down.

Again it comes back to programming. I often tell people that I
eat a lot of salad. The response – “Salad is boring.” – Not the
way I make it, it isn’t; I put all sorts of things into a salad
other than the green ingredients – chillies, sun blush tomatoes,
anchovies, tuna, sardines, chicken, olives, cheese, sausage etc.
Not all at once of course, I like a bit of variation on the
theme. So open up your mind and open up the fridge but be
careful what you take out. Remember – you won’t get an ulcer
from what you eat – you’ll get it from what’s eating you.

If you want to be successful in business, then you’re going to
have to do some exercise. Now I know you think you don’t have
the time. You may also be the type that doesn’t want to go to
the gym and lift heavy things or leap about in an aerobics
class; however, you need to take some exercise that makes you
sweat a little. I’m sorry, but a round of golf doesn’t count, it
isn’t the kind of exercise you need. Golf is great and it’s good
for the stress but it doesn’t make you sweat.

If you’re going to walk then walk fast for a distance, enough to
push up the heart rate and increase the breathing. (And don’t
run round the golf course with your clubs on your back – that’s
going too far.)

Again, get your internal program right and start to think how
you can make your exercise enjoyable. I see some people at the
health club making the whole business a real chore. They get on
a bike or a rowing machine and try to kill themselves for twenty
minutes. If that’s your thing then fine but please don’t make it
a chore, plug into the sound system and catch up with what’s on
TV.

I like to do circuit classes with a whole group of people many
of which have become friends. I enjoy the chat beforehand, the
music and the exercise. (And I also like the fact – there are
more girls than guys)

If you’re really not into exercise then please make sure you
have other activities outside of your workplace and make them
fun. Too many people are going home and slumping in front of the
TV – successful people don’t do that.

So look after the body and the brain and you’ll have lots of
vroom!
